FLYING TO NOSARA: LIBERIA VS. SAN JOSÉ VS. A DOMESTIC FLIGHT
Which route makes the most sense for your Costa Rica vacation?
Planning a trip to Nosara usually starts with one big question: Which airport should you fly into?
Costa Rica has two main international airports for visitors—Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia (LIR) and Juan Santamaría International Airport near San José (SJO). You can also take a short domestic flight to Nosara’s local airstrip, Nosara Airport (NOB).
The best option depends on your international flight, arrival time, luggage, budget, and whether you want a car during your stay. Here’s how the routes compare.
OPTION 1: FLY INTO LIBERIA (LIR)
For many visitors traveling to Nosara, Liberia is the simplest international airport to start from. It’s closer to the Nicoya Peninsula, and you can continue to Nosara by rental car or arranged transfer without making a domestic connection.
Plan for about 2.5 to 3 hours on the road from Liberia to Nosara. The actual trip can take longer depending on traffic, weather, and road conditions.
Liberia may be a good fit if you:
Find an international flight that works well for your dates.
Prefer to travel overland instead of taking a small plane.
Want to rent a car and explore beyond Nosara.
Are traveling with larger bags, surfboards, or a group.
You can rent a vehicle or arrange a private transfer through our concierge before your stay. If you plan to drive, consider your arrival time and the route conditions, especially during the rainy season. Arriving with plenty of daylight gives you more flexibility for the drive.
OPTION 2: FLY INTO SAN JOSÉ (SJO)
San José is Costa Rica’s largest international gateway and may offer the best (and least expensive) flight options for your itinerary. The tradeoff is the distance: driving from SJO to Nosara generally takes about 5 to 6 hours, worse with traffic, so it can make for a long first day.
If you fly into SJO, we can help you rent a car or arrange a transfer. You can also connect to Nosara on a domestic flight with SANSA. The flight from San José to Nosara takes about 45 minutes, and SANSA’s schedule can vary by season.
San José may be a good fit if you:
Find a better international flight or fare into SJO.
Want to avoid the long drive by connecting to a domestic flight.
Plan to visit other parts of Costa Rica before or after Nosara.
Have enough time between your international arrival and domestic departure.
If your international flight arrives late in the day, the domestic flight might not work same day. You may need to stay overnight near the airport and fly to Nosara the next morning. There are plenty of hotels nearby.
OPTION 3: TAKE A DOMESTIC FLIGHT TO NOSARA
A domestic flight is the quickest way to cover the distance between the San José area and Nosara. SANSA flies from San José to Nosara, with an approximate flight time of 45 minutes. The local airstrip is a short drive from the main Nosara communities, including Playa Guiones. Schedules and routes can change, so check the available flights for your travel dates directly with the airline.
SANSA also lists both Liberia and Nosara among its destinations. If you’re considering a domestic connection from Liberia, confirm that a flight is operating on your specific date and that the timing works with your international arrival. The flight from Liberia is a very short 20 minutes.
Small aircraft have limited space, so pack with care. SANSA’s baggage allowance depends on the fare you purchase. Its current policy allows one small personal item up to 10 pounds at no extra charge; checked baggage weight limits depend on the ticket, and oversized luggage may not be accepted on every flight. Check the airline’s current baggage rules before you book.
A domestic flight may be a good fit if you:
Want to spend less time traveling by road.
Are comfortable with a small aircraft.
Can pack within the baggage limits.
Have a schedule that allows enough time to make the connection.
Keep in mind that your international and domestic flights will likely be separate bookings. Allow plenty of time to clear immigration, collect your checked bags, and check in for the domestic flight. If your international flight is delayed, the domestic airline may not be responsible for missed connections on a separate ticket.
SO, WHICH ROUTE SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
For a shorter drive to Nosara: Fly into Liberia (LIR).
For more international flight options: Compare both airports for your dates. San José (SJO) may fit your itinerary better.
For the quickest trip from the airport area to Nosara: Take a domestic flight.
If you’re bringing extra luggage or surf equipment: Consider flying into an international airport and continuing by road. Check baggage limits before booking a domestic flight.
If you plan to explore several destinations by car: Rent a vehicle at either international airport.
There isn’t one right answer for every trip. Compare the total travel time and cost, including the domestic flight, transfer to the local airport, and luggage fees. A lower international airfare may not be the easiest option once you factor in ground transportation and connection timing.
A FEW TIPS BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check the full route, not just the airfare. Include travel time, transfers, baggage, and any overnight stay you might need.
Give yourself a generous connection window. Immigration, baggage claim, and check-in all take time.
Review the baggage rules for your exact fare. Small-plane baggage limits can be different from those on international flights.
Consider your arrival time. If you’ll be driving, plan your arrival so you have enough daylight for the trip.
Confirm transportation to your rental. Whether you fly into Nosara or arrive by road, arrange your final transfer before travel day.
