WHERE TO STAY IN NOSARA WITHOUT A CAR
One of the most common questions we hear from visitors planning a trip to Nosara is: Do I need to rent a car?
The short answer? Not necessarily.
Nosara is fairly spread out, and where you stay can make a huge difference in how easy it is to get around without your own transportation. Choose the right location and you can spend your days walking to the beach, grabbing coffee, heading to a yoga class, surfing, shopping, and going out to dinner without ever getting behind the wheel.
Choose a home a little farther out, however, and a car, golf cart, ATV, or regular tuk-tuk rides may quickly become part of your vacation.
If you're hoping to visit Nosara without renting a car, here's where we recommend staying.
Playa Guiones: The Best Choice for a Car-Free Nosara Vacation
If walkability is your priority, Playa Guiones is your best bet.
Guiones has the largest concentration of restaurants, cafés, surf schools, yoga and wellness studios, small markets, shops, and vacation rentals in the Nosara area. It's also home to Playa Guiones itself — the long sandy beach that most visitors picture when they think of Nosara.
Depending on exactly where your vacation rental is located, you can easily build an entire day around things within walking distance:
Wake up and walk to coffee or breakfast. Head to the beach for a morning surf. Grab lunch nearby. Spend the afternoon by the pool or browsing shops. Walk to yoga. Head out again for dinner.
No car keys required.
North Guiones
North Guiones is one of our favorite areas for visitors who want to walk as much as possible.
You'll find plenty of restaurants and cafés nearby, along with surf shops, wellness businesses, beach access and other conveniences. It's especially nice if you enjoy being able to walk out for dinner at night instead of arranging transportation every time you leave the house.
For travelers who want Nosara's restaurants, surf and social scene right outside the door, this is a particularly convenient location.
Central Guiones
Central Guiones is another excellent car-free option.
You're close to multiple roads leading toward the beach as well as cafés, shops, restaurants, markets and surf schools. Guiones has several jungle paths leading to the beach rather than a traditional beachfront road, so being close to one of those beach-access routes makes daily beach trips especially easy.
Central Guiones is a great choice for first-time visitors who want to be right in the middle of everything.
South Guiones
South Guiones can also work very well without a car, particularly if your home is close to the beach and the main Guiones roads.
It's generally a little quieter than the busiest parts of North and Central Guiones while still keeping the beach, restaurants and other amenities within relatively easy reach.
As always in Nosara, though, check the exact location of the home rather than assuming that anything labeled “Guiones” will automatically be walkable.
Playa Pelada: Possible Without a Car, But Location Matters
Playa Pelada is Nosara's quieter neighbor just north of Guiones.
It's beautiful, more residential and has its own restaurants and beach access. For the right traveler, staying in Pelada without a car can absolutely work.
The catch is that Pelada is less concentrated than Guiones. Some homes are an easy walk from the beach and nearby restaurants, while others are farther away or located on hills that make walking much less convenient.
If you're happy spending most of your time around Pelada and taking the occasional tuk-tuk into Guiones, you may not need a car at all.
If you expect to go back and forth between Guiones and Pelada several times a day, however, you'll probably appreciate having some form of transportation.
Areas We Wouldn't Recommend Without Transportation
This is where reading the location carefully becomes important.
“Nosara” refers to a much larger area than just Playa Guiones and Playa Pelada. Two vacation rentals can both have a Nosara address while offering completely different experiences in terms of walkability.
Areas farther inland, homes across the main road, hillside neighborhoods, Nosara town itself, and places farther south toward Garza generally aren't as convenient if your plan is to walk everywhere. Some neighborhoods that are grouped into the broader Guiones area, including hillside locations such as Las Huacas, can also involve steep roads and are better suited to guests with transportation.
A house may look close to the beach on a map but still involve a steep hill, an unpaved road or a much longer walk than expected.
When in doubt, ask before booking!
You Can Still Get Around Without Renting a Car
Not having a rental car doesn't mean you're limited to wherever you can walk.
Tuk-tuks are commonly used for short trips around Nosara and are an easy option when you want to head somewhere that's just a little too far to walk. Bikes and golf carts are also popular alternatives depending on where you're staying and how much exploring you want to do.
You can also arrange airport transportation ahead of time, which means it's completely possible to arrive in Nosara, get dropped at your vacation rental and spend the rest of your trip without renting a vehicle.
One thing worth remembering: Nosara has plenty of unpaved roads and limited street lighting in most areas. If you're walking at night, a phone flashlight or small flashlight is always a good idea.
Think About Your Vacation Style
Whether you need a car ultimately depends on how you want to spend your trip.
If your perfect Nosara vacation involves surfing every morning, walking to breakfast, spending afternoons by the pool, taking a yoga class and choosing a nearby restaurant for dinner, staying in central Playa Guiones can make renting a car completely unnecessary.
If you want to explore different beaches, visit restaurants all over town, take frequent trips to larger grocery stores or spend your days venturing beyond Guiones and Pelada, having transportation will give you much more flexibility.
Neither way is better — they simply create different kinds of vacations.
Our Biggest Tip: Ask How Walkable the House Really Is
When booking a vacation rental in Nosara without a car, don't just look at the neighborhood name.
Ask:
How long is the walk to the beach?
Can I comfortably walk to restaurants?
Is the road flat or hilly?
Are there cafés or markets nearby?
Will I need transportation at night?
How easy is it to get a tuk-tuk from the property?
Those questions will tell you much more than seeing “Playa Guiones” or “Nosara” written in a listing.
